3 Tips to Improve Your Mental and Physical Well-Being While Working Remotely
Since COVID rampaged through the country, working from home has become the new normal. While working remotely comes with many advantages (such as working in your pajamas, stretched out on your bed, or relaxing on your sofa), it also comes with real-world drawbacks. Every person reacts differently to remote work, and many miss the interactions with their colleagues, many of whom have become friends. How do you keep your mental and physical well-being on track, while working from home? These tips could be helpful.
1.Watch Your Diet.
When you are working from home, it is very easy to slip over to the refrigerator for a snack, reach for a bag of chips that is calling to you, and other less healthy eating habits. Shop for healthier alternatives and keep them in stock. If you feel the need to snack, choose fruit, veggies, or other healthy options rather than highly-processed commercial snacks, which lack nutrients, and are loaded with fat and salt, with limited, if any nutrient value.
Create a shopping list each week and consider the types of healthy food and drink you enjoy. Love peanut butter? Consider eating it on celery or lettuce, rather than bread. It can be difficult to change eating habits, but it may surprise you that once you make the transition you start to enjoy it – and you will feel better too.
2. Exercise at a Set Time.
It takes discipline to follow an exercise schedule, but your body will thank you! Mental issues such as depression can be improved with regular exercise. Take a walk, a jog, go to the gym, enroll in an exercise program, or use that exercise equipment you invested in, at a regular schedule time – and remember to reward yourself!
Find a friend to go with you to an exercise class (now you are committed) or pay for a series of classes to help feel obligated to take advantage of your investment. Not everyone is blessed with high levels of self-discipline, so having a workout buddy is one way to keep you on track – you must show up!
3. Set Realistic Boundaries. You Have a Life.
It is a sad fact that many employees, now that they are working remotely, are contacted before or after work hours, or have meetings scheduled all day, with no time for a break or a healthy lunch. Remote workers tend to work longer hours, and let your managers and colleagues know that you will be unavailable for calls or answering emails or texts past a set time.
You may be pleasantly surprised to hear thanks from your colleagues for insisting on a healthy work/life balance. Many of them have been suffering the same situation, and once you break the ice, everyone else feels safe setting boundaries. People who have families need time to spend with them. Single people want to spend time with friends and family, without constantly answering emails and texts. Did you know it is illegal to contact an employee after work hours in some countries? It’s true, and there is a good reason some countries have implemented these laws. People are healthier, mentally and physically, when they have time to decompress. You need it too!
